He first met Frisell in one configuration of Wayne Horvitz’s band “The President”. Soon after he played baritone sax on Frisell’s album “Before You Were Born”. Around the same time, they recorded as a duo, playing Robin Holcomb’s music on the album Todos Santos (Sound Aspects – SAS019). Other projects have involved producer Hal Willner – first, as part of the foundational trio, with violist Eyvind Kang, for the Robert Wilson project “In the Evening at Koi Pond”, and both being part of the house bands for Gavin Friday’s 50th birthday concert at Carnegie Hall, and the Daniel Lanois retrospective concert at Toronto’s Massey Hall. He also played in the ensembles for Willner’s staged readings of Hunter S. Thompson’s “The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved” (also a record),and Allen Ginsburg’s “Kaddish”, both of which Frisell composed and conducted the music.
